Comedy: The Mask
The Mask is a character from a comic book series created between 1982 and 1985 and published in the end of the 80’s. Later on, in 1994, the story was adapted to film, which became a great success worldwide directed by Chuck Russell.
Having two incredibly talented celebrities as leading actors (Jim Carrey and Cameron Diaz), The Mask introduced a new kind of humor, with various special effects.
The plot is about Stanley Ipkiss (Jim Carrey), a clumsy man who works in a bank and who has no success with women.
One day he finds a mysterious mask in a river and this mask transforms him into a maniac super hero whenever he wears it. Thus, the clumsy, awkward man gives place to an agile, funny, passionate and courageous creature, who tries to flirt with the dancer Tina Carlyle (Cameron Diaz). However, Tina's boyfriend, Dorian Tyrell (Peter Greene), wants to take over the mask to use its powers to do evil things.
In 1995 the story was adapted to television and became a cartoon.
Finally, in 2005 a sequel to the film - called Son of the Mask - was launched, but Jim Carrey refused to take part in it because he thought it would not be as successful as the first film.
Romantic Film: If only
We consider If Only (2004, EUA) one of the best romantic films of the last years because it perfectly portrays the feeling the we are all looking for: unconditional love.
The plot is about Samantha (Jennifer Love Hewitt) and her partner Ian (Paul Nicholls) who are always having to overcome periods of crisis in their relationship on account of the different ways they face life: while Samantha is a passionate, understanding girlfriend, Ian is an ambitious businessman who loves his career above all and who is always taking his girlfriend for granted.
One day, though, an accident changes their lives completely, causing Ian to see life through a different perspective. Fortunately, he is given a second chance to try to make things right.
Although this story sounds cliché, to a certain extent it makes you ponder over the important things in life and also makes you value real love.
You will be deeply touched by this film!
Curiosity:
Jennifer Hewitt was so in love with the story of the movie that she wrote two wonderful songs for it.
One of them is called “Love Will Show You Everything”. Check it out!
Thriller: The Silence Of The Lambs
The Silence Of The Lambs (EUA, 1991) is one of the best psychological thrillers ever produced, so much so that it was a five time Oscar winner (Best Picture, Best Actor (Anthony Hopkins), Best Actress (Jodie Foster), Best Director (Jonathan Demme) and Best Adapted Screenplay (Ted Tally)).
The plot, which was based on Thomas Harris´s best-selling novel of the same name published in 1988, is about an FBI agent called Clarisse Starling who has to interview and rely on an imprisoned serial killer and cannibal called Hannibal Lecter in order to receive his help on catching another serial killer who skins his victims.
The film was directed by Jonathan Demme; and Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins are the leading actors.
The Silence Of The Lambs is the second film in a sequel. The first one is Manhunter, which did not have Anthony Hopkins in the role of Hannibal and which was not very successful. However, after The Silence Of The Lambs was released and became a great success with Hopkins’s brilliant performance, producers decided to re-make Manhunter, but now with a different name – Red Dragon.
The third film is Hannibal, which was supposed to be the last one, but due to the popularity of the trilogy, producers came up with a fourth film - Hannibal Rising, which explains why Dr. Hannibal Lecter became such a cruel serial killer.
The aforementioned order is based on the dates when the films were released, but if the stories were told in chronological order, the films would be arranged the following way:
Hannibal Rising > Manhunter / Red Dragon > Silence Of The Lambs > Hannibal
The whole sequence is fabulous, but The Silence Of The Lambs is undoubtedly the best film. In fact, we think it was one of the best thrillers of all time.
Now we want to know your opinion:
What three films do you think people should watch before going to bed?
